Our Region:
Oltrepò Pavese
Torrazzetta is located on the foothills of Oltrepo' Pavese, the area that forms the southwestern tip of the Lombardy region and covers about one-third of the province of Pavia. The area is bounded to the north by the river Po, to the west by Piedmont and to the east by Emilia Romagna.
Going from Pavia to the South, once over the river Po, you come to a flat part at first, followed by a large hilly area dedicated to the cultivation of the vine and finally (in the southern tip), a mountainous area (Ligurian Apennines).
Oltrepo Pavese is characterised by a triangular shape like a "bunch of grapes", which probably established its destiny... The area is in fact recognisable for the thousands of small producers of grapes and wine and it is the third area in the world for the production of Pinot Noir after Champagne and Burgundy and the first in Italy with over 3,000 hectares of vines.
Being at a latitude of 45 degrees, this strip of land is the same distance from the North Pole and the equator, the ideal latitude for growing grapes.
The 14.5 hectares of vineyards (from a total of 45 acres in the municipalities of Borgo Priolo and Pinarolo Po), are all located in the municipality of Borgo Priolo.
The vineyards cover the hills of Torrazzetta (5.5 acres) and Pavarolo (9 hectares) with varied slopes and exposures and are located at altitudes of between 150 and 300 metres above sea level on a mainly calcareous and/or clay soil, on marl and sandstone.
The vineyards all belong to the DOC area of Oltrepò Pavese, all of which are grown organically (Bios Certification Body), planted with Pinot Nero, Barbera, Croatina, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Malvasia and Moscato.
